My Pages
On this page I am posting all visitors pictures that have been submitted - like this one of what looks to be a public display - possibly during an Open Day?   The clock tower block is seen in the background, and if anyone has any details regarding each picture, they can email me them by going to the links page.
The following pictures were submitted by Steve Mosley - Ex 1 Green Howards and were taken around 2006 during a visit to the Ebrington Site before the main demolition work started.
The Junior Ranks Mess (Cookhouse) which has now sadly been demolished.   In its heyday during Op Banner, the Cookhouse not only served the standard 3 meals a day, but also remained open 24 hours a day to serve up the NATO standard Egg Banjo to the various bricks out on patrol.   Does anyone remember Big Ginge from the Army Catering Corps???
"Snog Alley" - the side of the NAAFI block where romantic Soldiers spent many a romantic moment with their Honey's - The Church/Chapel was located in one of the huts seen in the background.
The NAAFI complex and Castle Bar had a Hairdresser's a full shop selling food and electrical items, a Bar and a burger/pizza bar.   Upstairs were Snooker tables, Table tennis etc and was run by the ladies from the WRVS (Womens Royal Voluntary Service)
The entrance to the Officers Mess has not changed since it was built.   The vines growing up the walls was a common feature from my time serving in Ebrington Barracks, however it has all been removed now.
The old Guardroom situated by the Limavady Road Entrance to Ebrington.   After numerous attacks and the murder of Pte Martin Patten I R Anglian in 1985, the entrance was closed off and a new entrance and guardroom was built on Browning Drive.
The View from the bottom of the hill looking accross the Parade Square.   The fence seen here ran around Brigade HQ and has now gone along with Brigade HQ itself.
The Parade ground was only used twice by the Green Howards over the two year period of their stay.   Once was due to the 300th anniversary of the Regiment's formation in 1688 (The Tercentenary Parade).   The other was when the Battalion was formed up by the then CO Lt Col JSW Powell to inform the Battalion of the death of Cpl Ian Metcalfe and the 5 members of 8th Infantry Brigade & Signal Squadron in the Lisburn Bus Bombing on 15th June 1988.
Steve managed to get a look through the window of the Corporals Mess - "Yorkshire Ghurka" and its clear that virtually everything has been stripped out.   This building is one of those to have been demolished.
Looking accross the top of the Parade Ground towards Cunningham Block in the Background.   The Clock on the tower block is visible as is the Corporal's Mess.
Looking towards what was A Company office in the white building - originally it was occupied by the Barracks Captain.   To the right is the Corporal's Mess.
Newspaper Picture submitted by Patrick Walsh formerly of 1 Green Howards
